Texturism That Is Present In The Natural Hair Community
First of all, before we get started; your hair is beautiful, whether it falls under the Type 3 or Type 4 categories and their subdivisions. They are equally beautiful.
Over the last few years, we have seen a rise in the number of people deciding to go natural, and by natural I mean ditching the relaxers and the constant need for hair straightening. Over Instagram, YouTube and Twitter we have seen the natural hair hashtag gain more and more popularity every day. It has been amazing to see people embrace their curls, coils and kinks. However, as you may now the looser curl has been deemed more desirable and hatred and discontent towards the more tightly knit curls have begun, this is known as texturism.
Texturism: Texturism fosters the idea that certain types of natural hair patterns are more desirable or beautiful than others.
In the media, when natural hair has been marketed it is always Type 3 hair, as shown above, that has received representation as opposed to Type 4 hair. This is due to Type 3 curls being closer to “eurocentric” ideals of beauty attaching a more positive stigma towards it. On the other hand, Type 4a, 4b and 4c…
